Fukt stencil in Sydney

Sydney stencil artist Fukt has been getting a little emo lately. He's known for stencils and paste-ups that contain gnawing social commentary. But lately he's stencilled angsty rants while waiting for Godot.

Worried about you Fukt. I found this piece in Newtown and it reminded me of Mobstr's web-famous Boooring series.

Maybe we should chat. You could tell me all the colours you'd make if giving them away wasn't illegal.

Sydney street art: Newtown

So where has Acid Midget been lately? I have no idea. But you're here, and so am I. A feeling of ambivalence has seeped inside me, like red wine stains teeth. What's the problem? I think you know...that's why you're here.

This is part of a large mural, by Hazzy Bee and Akisiew, on the streets of Newtown. On looking at it, I felt ambivalent again and a little lonely. Then realised I'm a man in a man's world and, with that idea fuelling me, I believed that other men would let me fix it.

In photography school they said "use the rule of thirds and your offspring will flourish" before realising rules made me sad. So, I've nicht idea what this mural is about - but I like it. Fifty Shades of Grey. Do you like random pondering? Do you like a person thinking freely without regard for fur form? Avoid the truth; it's all lies.

I've seen a few of these stencils around Newtown. They're a reminder to watch thy step. The streets are where crime/assaults/love happen, and I have a thing for you. Even though you don't know me, I _____ you.

Surf's up? No. Just a wheatpaste of a bro in short shorts and a sik tit tatt. Chitty chitty bang bang.

I stood on a crash barrier to shoot this. The artist, Syke, glued it to the side of a building. What's depicted on the board? The side of a building.

I promise to never tell you the truth.

Hong Kong, Thailand street art

So I recently returned from a two-week jaunt around Hong Kong and Thailand, doing the holiday thing and trying to unwind from Sydney life. HK is not a place to unwind and neither is Bangkok. They are panicky, f-f-frantic and combustible. And the humidity. Wow, sweating into sweat. Then a day of Thailand's southern islands and all that changed.

But no matter which city I'm in, I'm looking for street art. Below is a series of shots I took of both street art, tags and other bits. The shot above is a view of Hong Kong Island from the Avenue of Stars.

This is by Insa. Found in Central, on HK Island.

The next few were on a wall in Admirality, HK.

Then in Bangkok the toll on my senses was deeper. Everyone was rushing, some were begging. Tourists were targeted and harassed. The air stank of warm pollution.

Neck Face tag in Sukhumvit, Bangkok.

This was in a Bangkok laneway. Yes, I took an extremely heavy piss there.

Then I went to Phuket, and farther south to Phi Phi Island and, pictured above, Maya Bay. This is where The Beach was filmed.

Found this outside a tattoo parlour on Phi Phi. Reminds me of Anthony Kiedis.

This was taken on Phi Phi Don, an island hit hard by the Boxing Day Tsunami.

Phuket. A red flag means "dangerous current".

Graffiti artist Deadboy does interview, wears Gay Pride mask

This interview with derided Toronto stencil artist Deadboy got me thinking. See, that's the problem. We should consume street art the way we consume each other's Facebook news feeds. With blind hunger.

Deadboy, wearing a silver-coloured skull mask used to reach the angsty age 12-18 middle-class suburbia demographic, explains to his interviewer that the reason he got into stencilling was because UK artist Banksy inspired him.

Banksy is the Martha Stewart of the street art world. And stencilling is the graffiti equivalent of Tea Party politics. According to one reliable source, Deadboy began his stencilling career after watching Exit Through the Gift Shop. Yes, I know.

Look, Deadboy is obviously a talented bro with an agenda against Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. He went to the Cardinal Carter Arts Academy and realised that to make it as an artist he had to be discovered. To be discovered he has to be cool. To be cool he has to become part of a buzz movement, which is temporarily street art. So he put on a Gay Pride mask, or something, and stencilled a wall during daylight for this video while talking about how other artists are hating on him.

And now he's being written about by some loser Australian blogger - with a name equivalent to that f-cked up mask - who criticises other bros for their actual/minor/negligible successes.

Ah, what do I know. Watch the f-cking video.

Slug writes graffiti 'cry for help'

Graffiti artist/reckless vandal Slug wrote a message on this monorail pylon in central Sydney. He's been quiet lately - haven't seen him 'kick 2012's ass' yet.

Is he a little sad? Being the craziest graffiti writer in the city must be heavy.

After making so many elaborate murals maybe Slug's got nothing left to give. Last month he revealed his new foot tattoo to Acid Midget. It seemed like he was re-branding as a 'gay Shepard Fairey' or something:

How you holding up Slug? You in jail/gaol/Bali yet?

You know I stood in the rain for you, right?

All we can do is send hashtag love to this artistic Robin Hood. Tweet #getwellslug to all your peeps. Power to the Tweeple!

Graffiti under a bridge, St Peters

I turned the motor off and got my phone out. I was late running late, so late that she'd probably leave the bar with someone else.

Having a car for the first time in for-ages, I thought there wouldn't be much graffiti under the bridge at Edgeware Road, St Peters. I got out anyway.

I was wrong, sort of. I saw this Birdhat, a little faded, but still good. I'd say it's in its eighth trimester.

This was the biggest ILL cat I've seen. Too big to hold. I wonder if someone will come up with the idea of taking photos of a bunch of ILL's stencils and publishing them in a children's book? Maybe with a little funding from Marrickville Council?

Oh wait, someone has done that.

Mosaic stencil.

So at this point I got a text which read "hey bb, u no we hav a gud fing goin on yah? But I found anutha. He's strong n ridez a byke. Ltrz bb xoxo". And like that, everything went quiet.

So I got more Birdhat. Ninth trimester.

Kois. I've seen a bunch of this guy's pieces around Sydney's inner west. Welcome to Acid Midget Kois.

After this I drove home alone. And all I have to show for it is some photos of birds, cats and bears. Was it worth it?

BREAKING: Slug Gets a Tattoo

Sydney graffiti artist Slug sent me this photo of someone with a tattoo of his famous psychedelic dog/shark/elf.

Acid Midget has requested comment confirming the owner of this foot.

I speculate that tattoos could be bought as part of a bundle with Slug's new fanzine Sugar Shark.

Hibernian House graffiti

Hibernian House is a big old derelict building in the middle of Sydney. Artists, musicians, poets and designers live there. There's no proper front door. The lift is broken. It's filthy.

Almost every inch of the interior is covered in graffiti. There's a large Anthony Lister mural on the roof. There are puddles of water inside. A screaming silence echoes through every room as you climb the floors. The graff is disorientating; you struggle to remember the way back out.

And you're never sure if someone is watching.

The air is musty. There are messages scrawled everywhere. It feels unstable, unsafe. Should it be demolished to make way for a shiny new development? $1 million apartments?

I saw a poetry reading there this year. I sat on the worn, warm floorboards. There were hipsters. You can't replicate the feeling of electric words fizzing in the air. You can't replicate. This. Place.

You wouldn't demolish it because there aren't enough of these places. Artists need space to work in. They need immersion in a creative community. I need you and you need me.

I feel a little better now. When I share this with you, I feel better. Hope I see you again. I.
